Alopecia

Alopecia is an umbrella term for various forms of a condition that causes hair loss. In fact, alopecia has a number of causes and, oftentimes, can be treated.

Alopecia Areata. Alopecia areata is a common autoimmune disorder that can result in patchy hair loss. It’s caused when the body’s immune system attacks hair follicles. This condition can affect anyone at any age or gender however the majority of cases occur before the age of thirty. There is no known cure for alopecia areata at this time.

Alopecia Universalis. Alopecia universalis is an advanced form of alopecia areata that results in total loss of hair on scalp and body. Thought to be an immune system disorder, researchers believe this condition is caused when the immune system mistakenly identifies hair follicles as a threat and attacks them. There is no cure for alopecia universalis.

Alopecia Totalis. Alopecia totalis is a skin condition that causes total loss of scalp hair. Thought to be an autoimmune condition, the immune system attacks hair follicles after they’re mistaken as being a threat to the body. There is currently no cure for alopecia totalis.

Frontal Fibrosing Alopecia. Frontal fibrosing alopecia (FFA) is a form of hair loss that affects the front of the scalp (along the hairline) and around the temples, along with a loss of eyebrows. The exact cause of frontal fibrosing alopecia is unknown.

Androgenic Alopecia. This is the most common form of alopecia. Also known as “female pattern baldness.” In women, the hair becomes thinner all over the head, and the hairline does not recede. This type of hair loss has hereditary causes.

Traction Alopecia. Traction alopecia is hair loss caused by the hair being pulled in the same way for a long time. This condition can develop when hair is regularly wore in braids, bun or a ponytail. It can be reversed if you stop pulling your hair back. However, if not addressed, hair loss may be permanent.

Scarring Alopecia. This is a rare form of alopecia where scar tissue replaces hair follicles preventing future hair growth. The cause for this type of hair loss is unclear.
