What is Trichology?

Posted: Friday, December 8th, 2017

Trichology is an area of dermatology that deals with the scientific study of the health of hair and scalp. A “trichologist” is not medically qualified as a doctor, per se, but is a hair and scalp specialist who helps to diagnose the causes of hair loss, hair breakage and hair thinning.

The word “trichology” comes from the Greek word, “trikhos,” meaning hair and was first recognized in Britain in the late 19th century. In present times, trichology is considered a para-medical discipline that takes a holistic approach to hair loss problems.

By incorporating this concept of holism, all trichologists evaluate their clients through a combination of personal history, lifestyle, genetic factors and environmental conditions. And based on this information, trichologists suggest individualized treatments and may advise clients on nutrition and lifestyle changes to improve the health and appearance of one’s hair and scalp.
