The Different Forms of Alopecia

Androgenic Alopecia

  • Most common form of alopecia

Telogen Effluvium

  • Often linked to a physical shock, including childbirth
  • Hair usually returns to normal post-shock

Anagen Effluvium

  • Associated with chemotherapy
  • Hair usually returns to normal post-therapy

Alopecia Areata

  • Results in patchy hair loss
  • Caused when the body’s immune system attacks hair follicles

Alopecia Totalis

  • Total loss of scalp hair
  • Caused by immune-system attack

Alopecia Universalis

  • Total loss of body hair
  • Caused by immune-system attack

Scarring Alopecias

  • Rare form of alopecia
  • Scar tissue replaces hair follicles preventing future hair growth
  • Cause is unclear
