The Importance of Early Detection of Breast Cancer

Posted: Friday, October 13th, 2017

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month (BCAM), a time during which major breast cancer charities launch a targeted campaign to increase awareness of the disease and raise funds for research. However, with more than 252,000 new cases of breast cancer predicted in 2017, it’s more important than ever to do our part to educate women about breast cancer and the importance of early detection.  We’ve compiled some valuable advice for women to consider.

Perform Self-Examinations

Although breast cancer can’t be prevented, women can take important steps to help detect it as early as possible. Adult women of all ages are encouraged to perform breast self-examinations at least once a month. The benefit of regular self-examinations is to help women become familiar with how their breasts look and feel so that they can contact their healthcare professional if there is any change.

Know Your Family History

A family history of breast cancer can increase a woman’s risk for breast cancer. Women who have a first-degree relative, including a mother, sister or daughter, with breast cancer doubles their risk for breast cancer. In some cases, this family history of breast cancer can be linked to having an abnormal gene associated with a high risk of breast cancer, like the BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene. These are reasons why it is vital to know your family history and to get tested if breast cancer runs in your family.

Talking to Others in Same Health Situation Post Diagnosis

We hope our advice helps to raise some awareness about the importance of early detection of breast cancer. If you have been diagnosed with breast cancer, be sure to reach out to others who are going through the same thing. It’s helpful to become involved in programs and to talk to others in the same health situation.
