What to Eat for Healthy, Shiny Hair

Posted: Friday, September 29th, 2017

Growing healthy hair can be achieved by a combination of efforts. Aside from the recommendation of cutting down on heat styling and coloring hair, there are certain foods we can eat to help improve the strength and look of our hair. Here are some of the top nutrients and food examples to keep in mind when eating your way to healthy, shiny hair.

Foods rich in zinc. One unexpected food that can help you grow healthy, shiny hair is shellfish like clams and oysters. These foods have high levels of zinc, which nutritionists explain can help speed up hair growth and can prevent hair loss. Other foods that are rich in zinc that achieve this same result are peanut butter and cheese.

Foods rich in Vitamin C. Vitamin C is an important ingredient for achieving healthy, shiny hair because it helps boost collagen production. Collagen is important for keeping the hair shaft strong for hair growth. Fruits and vegetables, like papaya, peppers, and Brussel sprouts all are great examples of foods rich in Vitamin C.

Foods rich in folate and iron. Folate helps to create red blood cells and Iron helps our red blood cells to carry oxygen throughout the body. Both are vital to the growth of healthy, shiny hair. To increase levels of these important dietary nutrients, load up on healthy green vegetables like spinach, which is high in both nutrients. Asparagus and broccoli are great options for getting more folate acids into your diet. Swiss chard and garbanzo beans are a great *and yummy!)  go-to for iron-rich foods.
